Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing)
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) is an essential part of a Health & Safety policy for your business. To meet the requirements of the 1989 Electricity at Work Regulations, it is regarded to be necessary to implement a programme of planned inspection and testing of portable appliances
PAT testing is carried out on a periodic basis to all portable and fixed appliances in the workplace, i.e. any equipment that a portable plug supplied from the mains electricity.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) states that 25% of reported electrical accidents involve portable appliances.
The Electricity at Work Regulations (EWR) places legal responsibility on employers & employees to comply with these regulations & as practically possible the duty of care to ensure that no danger results from using electrical equipment.
What appliances need to be PAT tested?
An electrical appliance is classed as "portable" and connected to the mains by way of a lead and plug. For Landlords this will count for all appliances that you provide for your tenants use i.e. fridge, freezer, washing machine etc.
What do the PAT tests involve?
The testing consists of two separate activities; a visual inspection to check for damage and poor electrical standards and a series of instrument tests to check for less obvious electrical faults.
